Cumulus cells are specialised granulosa cells that surround the oocyte and form the cumulus–oocyte complex. The innermost cumulus cells adjacent to the zona pellucida constitute the corona radiata. These cells are embedded within an extracellular matrix rich in hyaluronan and other macromolecules that expands around the time of ovulation. Cumulus cells participate in oocyte metabolism, meiotic regulation and molecular communication during follicular development. During fertilisation, capacitated spermatozoa must traverse the expanded cumulus matrix before establishing functional interaction with the zona pellucida and oocyte.
