A zygote is the single-cell developmental stage produced following successful fertilisation and activation of the oocyte. It contains genetic material contributed by both the maternal and paternal gametes and normally represents restoration of the diploid chromosome complement. During the pronuclear phase, the maternal and paternal genomes remain physically separated within their respective pronuclei despite occupying the same cellular cytoplasm. DNA replication and cytoskeletal organisation prepare the zygote for formation of the first embryonic mitotic spindle. Completion of the first mitotic division transforms the one-cell zygote into a two-cell cleavage-stage embryo.
