The acrosome reaction is a regulated exocytotic process involving fusion between the sperm plasma membrane and the outer acrosomal membrane. This process results in release or exposure of acrosomal components required for progression through the oocyte’s extracellular coverings. Acrosomal changes may begin within the cumulus environment and continue during interaction with the zona pellucida rather than occurring as a single instantaneous event. Completion of appropriate acrosomal remodelling exposes sperm membrane regions required for subsequent interaction with the oolemma. Abnormal or absent acrosomal function can interfere with zona penetration and normal sperm–oocyte fusion.
