Implantation is the coordinated biological process through which a blastocyst establishes interaction with the receptive endometrium. It occurs after fertilisation, cleavage, blastocyst formation and hatching from the zona pellucida. Initial apposition is followed by more stable adhesion between the trophectoderm and endometrial epithelium and subsequently by trophoblastic invasion. Trophoblast differentiation contributes to development of cytotrophoblastic and syncytiotrophoblastic populations involved in early placental establishment. Implantation is therefore a developmental event distinct from fertilisation and occurs several days after formation of the zygote.
