Ovulation is the physiological release of the oocyte–cumulus complex from a mature ovarian follicle following the preovulatory luteinising hormone surge. Immediately before ovulation, the primary oocyte completes meiosis I and develops into a secondary oocyte arrested at metaphase II. Follicular rupture releases the secondary oocyte together with its surrounding cumulus and corona radiata cells. The oocyte–cumulus complex is subsequently captured by the fimbrial region and transported into the uterine tube. Successful fertilisation requires temporal coordination between ovulation, sperm transport and the period during which both gametes remain functionally competent.
