The acrosome is a specialised membrane-bound organelle positioned over the anterior region of the sperm nucleus. It develops from the Golgi apparatus during spermiogenesis and contains enzymes and proteins involved in gamete interaction. The acrosomal membranes undergo extensive reorganisation during the acrosome reaction as a fertilising sperm approaches or interacts with the oocyte coverings. Acrosomal exocytosis exposes molecular components required for continued zona pellucida interaction and progression toward the oocyte plasma membrane. Proper acrosomal structure and function therefore represent important components of sperm fertilising competence.
