A spermatozoon is the mature haploid male gamete produced through spermatogenesis within the seminiferous tubules of the testes. It consists of a head containing the paternal genetic material and acrosome, a connecting region, a mitochondria-rich midpiece, and a flagellum responsible for progressive motility. A mature human spermatozoon normally contains 23 chromosomes, representing one haploid set of paternal genetic material. Following ejaculation, spermatozoa undergo capacitation within the female reproductive tract, acquiring the functional competence required for fertilisation. During fertilisation, an appropriately capacitated spermatozoon interacts with the cumulus–oocyte complex, undergoes acrosomal remodelling, penetrates the zona pellucida, and fuses with the oolemma. Following sperm–oocyte fusion, the paternal chromatin undergoes decondensation and reorganisation to form the male pronucleus.
