A spermatozoon is the mature haploid male gamete produced through spermatogenesis within the seminiferous epithelium of the testis. It consists structurally of a head containing the paternal genome and acrosome, a connecting region, a mitochondria-rich midpiece and a flagellum responsible for motility. A normal mature human spermatozoon contains 23 chromosomes. Before fertilisation, spermatozoa undergo capacitation and associated membrane and signalling modifications that produce fertilising competence. Following sperm–oocyte fusion, the sperm contributes the paternal genome and sperm-derived factors involved in initiating oocyte activation.
